# List windows Song ▸ Playing Sequence…, Block List… and Instrument List… open the side panels' three lists as windows of their own. A window is the same list, not a copy: opening it takes the list out of its panel, and closing the window puts it back. The window adds what the panel has no room for: renaming, the instruments' details in columns, and in the playing sequence, which block a sequence pos. plays. The ⇱ on a list's heading in the panel opens its window too, and so does clicking **SEQ** or **BLOCK** in the transport. ## In every list **Picking.** A click picks a row. Ctrl-click (⌘-click on a Mac) adds a row to the pick or takes it out, and Shift-click picks every row from the last one you clicked without Shift to this one. Picking a row does not go there, so you can choose where something goes without leaving what you are working on. The buttons, the right-click menu and a drag act on the whole pick; where only one row makes sense, they use the row you clicked last. **Right-click** a row for a menu of what can be done to it, worded for the pick ("Delete 3 blocks"). Right-clicking inside the pick keeps it; outside it, that row is picked first. A greyed command's tooltip says why it can't run. **Dragging** rows reorders them, and the whole pick travels. Blocks can also be dragged from the block list onto the playing sequence, which inserts them where they land. Escape cancels a drag. **The dim row at the end** adds one more: a sequence pos. for each picked block, a new block the size of the one on screen, or an empty instrument slot. When nothing more fits, it is greyed and its tooltip says why. **Undo and saving.** Every change made here can be undone (Edit ▸ Undo). Each one changes the module's structure, so saving afterwards rewrites the module rather than patching the original file. Some are refused on a module that can't take them, a ProTracker .mod or a module whose song is made of several play sequences or sections, and the status line then says why and what to do. ## Playing Sequence The blocks the song plays, in turn: one row per sequence pos., numbered from 00, each with the name of the block it plays and, in brackets, its number. In a module made of sections, each break between them shows as "— section break —", which a click does not pick. Double-click a sequence pos. to go there. During playback on the native engine the song jumps to it; when stopped, it becomes where Continue starts from. **Plays block** is the block the picked sequence pos. plays. Its arrows change it at once (Shift steps by ten, and the mouse wheel works over the box too), and a typed number applies with Enter or on leaving the box. On a section break it is empty and can't be changed. **+** inserts the blocks picked in the block list before the picked sequence pos. **−** removes the picked sequence pos., though never the last one: the song needs at least one. **▲ ▼** move the picked sequence pos. one place up or down. The right-click menu adds **Duplicate sequence pos.**, and **Change sequence pos. … to block …**, which makes the picked sequence pos. play the block picked in the block list. The playing sequence holds up to 255 sequence pos., or 128 in a ProTracker .mod. The line under the buttons says which block the picked sequence pos. plays. ## Block List Every block in the module, numbered from 00, with its name (or "Block" and its number) and how many lines it has. A dot before the number marks a block the playing sequence never plays, and a named block's tooltip gives its full name. Double-click a block to show it in the pattern editor; during playback on the native engine, playback moves to it. **Name** renames the picked block. Enter or SET applies it; leaving the box does not. Names are Latin-1 only, as in [Block Properties](block-properties.md#name). **+** inserts a new, empty block at the picked block's number, the size of the block on screen. The picked block and every block after it move up one number and the playing sequence is renumbered with them, so the song plays what it did; the new block is not in it yet. **−** deletes the picked blocks, after asking. Every sequence pos. that plays them goes too, and the blocks after them move down a number. **▲ ▼** move the picked blocks one number earlier or later. The playing sequence follows, so the song still plays the same music. Playback stops. **PROPS** opens Block Properties on the picked block. The right-click menu adds **Show block**, inserting the pick into the playing sequence at the picked sequence pos., and the block buffer's **Copy**, **Cut**, **Paste over** and **Swap**, which show the block first and then act on it. The line under the buttons gives the picked block's number and size. ## Instrument List The module's instrument slots as a table. Its columns are the ones Windows MED's instrument list has, in its own abbreviations, plus the play button, Format and Env. | Column | What it shows | |---|---| | **#** | The slot's number in hex, as notes name it (01–3F). A dot before it marks an instrument no note plays. | | **▸** | Plays the instrument. While it sounds it shows ■, which stops it. | | **Name** | The instrument's name. | | **Mem Use** | How much sample data it holds, both channels of a stereo sample counted, or Synth. | | **Format** | 8b or 16b, st for stereo, HYB for a hybrid, and the number of octaves of a multi-octave sample. | | **Vol** | Its volume: 0–127 for an instrument from Windows MED, 0–64 otherwise. | | **Loop** | → for a loop, ↔ for a ping-pong loop, blank when it does not loop. | | **Loop Start**, **Loop Len** | Where the loop starts and how long it is; blank when it does not loop, as in Windows MED. | | **Transp**, **Fine** | Transpose and finetune. | | **Env** | Hold (H) and decay (D), when set. | A MIDI instrument shows MIDI and its channel instead. Transp, Fine and Env are blank for a module whose format cannot hold them: the MED formats before OctaMED's, and ProTracker .mod. Clicking an instrument makes it the current one, the instrument new notes are entered with, as well as picking it. Double-click opens Instrument Properties. Dropping a sample file on a row loads it into that slot. **Name** renames the picked instrument: up to 40 characters, Latin-1 only, which is what the format stores. Enter or SET applies it. **CLEAR** empties the picked slots, after asking. A slot keeps its number, so notes that used it fall silent rather than moving to another instrument; filling the slot again, or undo, brings them back. **▲ ▼** move the picked instruments one slot earlier or later, and every note that used them follows, so the music does not change. Playback stops first. There is no button that deletes a slot: notes name instruments by number, so removing one would change the instrument of every note above it. A MED module has room for 63; the dim row at the end adds an empty slot until then. The right-click menu adds **Load sample into instrument…**, which picks a file to load into the slot. The button in the title bar switches every row between compact and expanded, where each instrument's waveform is drawn taller behind it; the panel's list follows the same setting. The line under the buttons gives the picked instrument's number and kind.
