# Generate Volume Echo

Tools ▸ Generate Volume Echo… repeats a note down the pattern at a falling
volume, writing the notes and 0C (set volume) commands you would otherwise
work out by hand. It is on the pattern's right-click menu too, and the window
stays open while you mark a different range in the grid.

Windows MED's dialog has the same two fields, and OctaMED's Note Echo the same
pair. The choice of what to do with music already there is Mediante's.

## The starting note

Give the note to be echoed an **0C** volume command, then mark from that note
down to where the echo should end. The range may start above the note: in each
marked track, the starting note is the first note with an 0C on it. Each echo
is that note again, with its instrument, and an 0C at the new volume.

A range over several tracks echoes every track that has a starting note of its
own, and leaves the others alone. The echoes are written on the command page
the cursor is on, and the starting note's 0C is read from that page too.

Until there is a starting note, GENERATE ECHO is greyed, and its tooltip says
what is missing.

## Distance between echoes

How many lines apart the echoes are, counted from the starting note: 1 to 64.

## Minimum volume

The volume **halves** on each echo. That is fixed, as it is in MED: this field
is the floor the echo stops at, not how fast it fades. The echo ends before
the volume would drop below it.

From 64 with a minimum of 2, the echoes are 32, 16, 8, 4 and 2. The line under
the button shows the series for the note you have marked, before anything is
written.

Volumes run 0–127 on a module written by Windows MED (MED4), and 0–64 on any
other, where an 0C above 64 does nothing at all on an Amiga player.

## Existing music

What happens to rows below the starting note that already hold something: a
note, an instrument number, or a command on any command page.

- **Keep — fill empty rows only**, the default. Echoes land only on empty
  rows. A row in use is stepped over and keeps what it has, but the volume
  still halves for it: the echo keeps time by lines, not by what it lands on.
  Both MEDs document this rule.
- **Replace — the selection becomes the echo.** Rows the echo reaches get an
  echo whatever was there, and every other marked row below the note is
  emptied, including rows after the volume has faded out. Mediante asks first,
  counting the cells that would be written over or emptied.

Rows at or above the starting note are never touched, in either mode, and one
undo step takes the whole echo back.
